Top 5 Summer Sports in 2014
Yes, it is time to think about summer! Why?
Because it is pouring down, windy and my heating just does not want to warm up!
So summer thoughts are happy thoughts, and in my case warm thoughts!
Being in the town of Brighton sports in
summer at the beach just cannot be ignored. There is always a great mix going
on at the seafront each year, from water sports to street sports everything is
touched on. But, what are the top 5 trends this summer, can you really afford
to not be rolling with the “in-crowd” (no pressure)?!

Well to ensure you know what sports you can either dig out from your ‘past skills drawer’, or for which ones you will have to start practicing in your hallway (or bathtub); I have put together this top 5 list:
Retro is Back
Skateboarding
By Ochre Jelly via Flickr
Set the little skater in you free! Back in
the 80s and early 90s skateboarding was THE big thing! This could be due to the
fact that the “Back to the Future trilogy” was screening. Only the greatest
movie trilogy of all times, which had skateboarding heavily featured. Who could
forget Marty McFly skating himself out of hairy situations, until he arrives in
2015 when he mounts his amazing “hover board”. This summer could be the summer
of skateboarding, as people get prepared to finally enter 2015 eagerly awaiting
to finally pick up their hover boards at high-street retailers.
Kiting

I am not talking about our childhood memory
of a diamond shaped DIY kite which you had to drag along whilst trying to get
to a speed that would allow it to lift off. We are talking power kites, stunt kites, and
sport kites – to sum it up “really cool kites”.
Kiting is definitely back, just walking
past the beach on a windy day is enough to see how popular this sport is
already becoming. However, these kites are different; it’s retro with a twist.
These new kites can be combined with loads of other sports i.e. water sports,
snowboarding and skateboarding – they allow for unbelievable stunts and jumps. Definitely
worth trying to wipe out that childhood memory and enter the more exiting world
of kites.

Surfing

Most men’s interest in surfing was awaken
due to an amazing TV series in the 90s. Yes, you are guessing right, Baywatch.
Of course I only watched it for the surfing stunts – never even realised the
swimsuits!
Joke aside, with last summer’s heat still
in our minds; surfing is the perfect sport to take on not just to cool off, but
to look pretty cool as well. Even just having a surf board and using it to
sunbath will get you the right attention! If the prospect of being dragged
under water by a big wave is not totally up your street – but you still want to
join a cool water sport why not try Paddle
Boarding, and join the annual paddle around the pier event in Brighton
Basket Ball
By DennisSylvesterHurd via Flickr
During summer you will find me often at the
basketball court down at Brighton beach. The love for basketball came with US
movies, especially Space Jam – if Bugs Bunny can net a ball – by god so can I! One
of the sports that will need the least investment in kit! You just need a ball!
Then walk up to any public basketball court and hang around, sooner than you think
you will be drawn into a team – and voila your basketball career has officially
started (well that’s how it worked for me, and I wouldn’t call it a career
either!)
The Unexpected
Flash Stacking
Never heard of flash stacking? Well you really want to check out this video on “Cup Stacking World Record” In short, you got a load of cups and you got to stack them as fast as possible. You thinking “PAH that’s easy?!” Again you really want to watch the video. It is all about stacking pyramids of cups as fast as possible. The current stacking record is held by Chandler Miller who achieved it in 1.482 seconds. If you think you would be unique by taking up this sport, I must disappoint, there are 555,932 participants, according to the Guiness World Record in 2013.
