The Pop Up Hot Tub Film Club
I've been reading this month about the popularity of Hot Tub Cinema, a unique experience whereby you can enjoy cult classic films whilst lounging in a hot tub atop a building, among friends and strangers. Hot Tub Cinema is currently taking place in trendy Shoreditch (where else) but will be upping sticks to Bristol next month to give the west country a taste of this fun new phenomenon. So what's it all about?
The pop up events bandwagon has been growing in popularity to the point where it will surely soon become passe. I predict we are reaching pop up saturation point so there is a limited window to get involved before we are so inundated by pop up shops, restaurants, art exhibitions and happening wine bars that those of us who are genuinely cool will have to wash our hands of them, just like when Jeremy Clarkson ruined stonewashed denim for the rest of us.
Still, for the time being, there's a little mileage left in the concept, and this watching a film in a jacuzzi in London business is certainly one I approve of wholeheartedly. The hot tubs originally "popped up" back in 2012, when the concept was born, and have been in place in their current Shoreditch home since August. It's just as well they are hot tubs, given the August we've just had, and I wonder just how popular they'll prove to be when on their Bristol run in October.
The film focus has gone from 80s to 90s and will wrap up in London with a selection of the best the 00s had to offer, including Anchorman (awesome film), The Hangover (awesome film) and Bridget Jones' Diary (no comment). By contrast Bristolians only have the choice of one film from each of the past five decades, although there can be little arguing over the suitability of the flicks they've chosen: Grease is a no brainer for bringing in the ladies, Ghostbusters is an inspired choice for attracting the chaps, The Lion King will appeal to families, The Hangover for the party crowd and Hot Tub Time Machine... well they just HAD to show it didn't they.
Filmgoers keen to soak up this unique atmosphere can either hire a tub between 6-8 people, or purchase a ticket or two and share with other (hopefully) like minded film fans. Waiters bring drinks and snacks to your tub, although where you're supposed to keep your wallet to pay them with isn't clear but you'd hope they'll have thought this through!
Two screens ensure everyone gets a good view and there's full surround sound to give you the whole cinematic experience. Given the rate at which the 30 tubs per screening have sold out so far I think it's safe to say these events have proven to be very popular and we're sure to see Hot Tub Cinema return next year. Could Brighton be the next city in their sights? I hope so!
