Body Confidence Issues: Why we Need to Ignore the Media and Focus on Ourselves

Image
The media is saturated with debates on body image and confidence. It’s hard not to open a newspaper and see an article about Aiden Turner’s abs in Poldark or hear debates on what’s considered the ‘ideal’ female body. The pressure we put on ourselves for not having the perfect physique is damaging. We need to move away from this obsession and instead, appreciate how we’re all unique and like our bodies for what they are. Source: https://www.flickr.com/photos/practicalowl/ The pressure on women to lose weight and conform to a size double zero or look like a model is everywhere. More people are speaking out about such things and advocating a ‘normal’ representation of women’s bodies, and as a result we’re finally seeing a shift. Celebrities have also joined the debate, from Kim Kardashian to Iggy Azaelia. All report having insecurities abut how they look, all don’t conform to the shape you see on catwalks, and all represent women of other sizes, which the world and fashion needs to

Why Summer Camps Should Introduce Creative Technologies

Working at a summer camp in Australia was one of the greatest times in my life; seeing Brisbane for the first time was an experience I’ll never forget and one day hope to try again. This is something that didn’t occur to me until long after I’d arrived home. Around this time, Apple announced its own incarnation of summer camp, providing a three day workshop to teach children aged 8 to 12 about technology, as well as filmmaking, recording music, and designing webpages using al

Lewes Road Community Garden & the Fight Against Gentrification

Image
Go to 58 Lewes Road in Brighton today, and all you’ll find is a rather sub-standard Morrisons Local. The space of this shop holds a sordid yet colourful history, filled with cohesive community spirit and a campaign against the gentrification of UK high streets. Before the Morrisons was erected, 58 Lewes Road was the site of the fantastical Lewes Road Community Garden. Originally the site of a former Esso garage, it had been left derelict for over 5 years. Frustrated at the lack of progress at the site, in May 2009 residents of the area took control of the empty space and transformed it into a community garden. The garden was formally opened on Sunday 24 th May. Source: https://www.flickr.com/photos/mosmancouncil/ The garden was accomplished through the collaborative efforts of around a hundred residents from Brighton and the surrounding areas. Plants and pots were donated by Brighton based garden centres, old tyres and scrap from a garage in Patcham were used to make se
